In the Edo Period people couldn't switch social classes/jobs at all. Because they couldn't change their classe/jobs they couldn't use their special talents most of the time.

Because of the emperor we can now be something else other than a peasant.
Because of the exclusion laws people were forced to destroy large ships that could make long voyages and scientific books. Making them unable to trade with other countries.

Back then the people in the Edo Period didn't care much about education. Because they didn't care much about it they weren't very scientific. The people back then based their causes by their religion.

In this period the citizens could change classes and jobs if they wanted to. Meaning that people with talents could use them to their advantage in life.
People focused more on science and exploring. Because of it they could sell their things to other countries. Also foreigners were allowed to visit Japan and were able to trade with them there.

Education was was more valued which leaded to scientific discoveries made by them. Also they would have a much more different culture because of the Wester changes to Meiji Japan.
