Storyboard Text

  • Have you ever wondered how the Cell Theory came to be? I vaguely remember learning about it in school. What do you recall from then?
  • I remember a good amount, but let's go grab a snack from the kitchen and talk about it on the way there.
  • Do you want to grab some apples?
  • Sure!
  • You know, it's kind of cool to think that all organisms are made up of one or more cells. Like the food we'll eat for lunch is even made of cells.
  • Yea! Matthias Schleiden discovered that all plants are made of cells back in 1838. One year later, Theodore Schwann found out that all animals are made of cells too!
  • It's kind of weird to think that the cell is the basic unit of structure and function. I mean they're so small. You need a whole microscope to see most of them!
  • Didn't hook coin the name "cell" back in 1665 when he looked at cork under a microscope?
  • Yea, and Robert Brown, a Scottish botanist, discovered the nucleus of a cell in 1828.
  • Y'know, I wonder how Virchow found out that all cells come from preexisting cells.
  • Haha1 Do you think he just sat there looking through a microscope waiting for something to happen?
  • Pfft- Maybe! You think we should go ask him ourselves? Haha!
  • Oh for sure! Let's get working on that time machine!
