  • Henry Oliver came to northern MN in 1892 to find a reliable source of iron ore to produce steel. He invested in some small iron mining companies that were operating on the Mesabi Range.
  • The Mesabi iron ore range was located in Duluth Minnesota. The Ojibwa word Mesabi means giant .
  • The workers used dynamite to find iron ore in caves. It was extremely dangerous and some men even died! The miners also dug up iron ore using shovels.
  • In 1916 the workers built a giant steel mill in Duluth so the iron ore could be made into steel locally.
  • By 1871 railroads ran south to saint Paul. The same year workers made a deep canal from lake superior into the harbor to make access easier for ships to transport iron ore.
