Anandibai Joshi was born as Yamuna in 1865 in Kalyan, Maharashtra. Due to her mother's pressure, she got married to a 20-year-old widower- Gopalrao Joshi at the age of 9.
CLIMAX
At the age of 14, Anandibai gave birth to a child who died just after 10 days due to lack of medical care. This incident inspired her to become a physician and help other women in similar situations.

Anandibai's husband Gopal Rao was very supportive, he encouraged her to study & they moved to Calcutta. Anandibai wanted to learn more about western medicine to enhance her knowledge and looked for various medical institutes.
RESOLUTION
Anandibai Joshi was the 1stfemale physician of India. Although she practiced for only 2-3 months she set an example for girls education all over.
Gopal Rao wrote a letter to Royal Wilder talking about Anandi's medical interest. It caught attention of Theodicia Carpenter who offered them accommodation in America. Despite her poor health, she got enrolled in Women's Medical College, Pennsylvania & completed her medical training at the age of 19.

Her health deteriorated due to tuberculosis. After completing her MD in 1886 she returned to India & was appointed as physician-in-charge of the female ward of the local Albert Edward Hospital, Kolhapur. Unfortunately, she died on 23 Feb 1887 due to tuberculosis, just before turning 23.
She became the 1st Indian woman to receive education abroad & to obtain a medical degree. She rose to fame for her sheer determination, hard work, becoming an inspiration to all girls aspiring to become confident and independent. A Hindi series, a Marathi movie, & a biography have been dedicated to her life.
