  • hey check out this thing I took from the math classroom today?
  • what? wait why did you take that?
  • scene 2
  • you really think it matters that much?
  • I mean it is just a shape, but at the same time, stealing is bad and we all know that. you should put it back before she sees
  • scene 3
  • what's she gonna do? send me to prison for stealing something with no value?
  • sooner or later she is gonna notice its gone and you are gonna get in trouble
  • this is josh, he finds himself getting into a lot of trouble constantly, his math teacher Ms. Connor sent him our of the class for being disruptive, and he did not like it, so to get back at her and express his feelings towards the situation he steals one of the items from her classroom

  • Josh brags about it to his friend Mara about his recent theft, she tries to tell him that what he did was morally wrong and tries to convince him to return the item

  • Josh dismisses what his friend Mara is saying, though she cant punish him, she disapproves of his behavior and considers it deviant and though it is not punishable by law she knows what he did was morally wrong and that it violates a social norm , and any punishment he receives would be informal

  • it's 20 years later and Josh has not changed much, he began participating in smaller crimes like shoplifting, and one day he decided to rob a bank for whatever reason
  • he was ultimately identified by the witness of the store he robbed and after a very long and exhausting trial was sentenced to 6 years in prison by the judge 
  • at this point Josh has violated more than just a norm, he has violated a law which means he will will also be punished by the law. The social norm he violated was considered a crime, which means he will receive formal punishment
