  • While I did enjoy the unit over the Periodic Table, I found the unit covering Chemical Reactions to be quite interesting too!
  • Chemical Reactions are the process through which atoms of a substance are rearranged to form different substances. There are multiple kinds of reactions, with combination, decomposition, combustion, neutralization, and displacement being most common. All of which are shown on the computer, in order of mention.
  • Chemical reactions are held together with chemical bonds and can be represented with chemical equations. These chemical equations show how reactants yield products with reactants being the initial substance and the product being the result. Subscripts and Coefficients are also present, with subscript showing the number of individual atoms, and the coefficient showing the number of molecules.
  • CH4 + 202 --> CO2 + 2H202H20 --> 2H20 + 024Fe + 302 --> 2Fe2+03
  • All chemical equations must be balanced, which means that there must be the same amount of matter on each side of the equation. The equation below is unbalanced, as the number of N and H are not the same on both sides. The balanced equation is shown below, with the changes in parenthesis.
  • N2 + H2 = NH3N2 + (3)H2 = (2)NH3
  • Chemical Reactions can be determined by the reactivity of an element as well. The reactivity of an element is determined by its placement on the periodic table. Reactivity also determines an element's tendency to undergo reactions. All elements follow a trend, though each trend is slightly different depending on the grouping of the elements.
  • And that's about it! These were just the main concepts from the unit, as chemical reactions and their nuances can be much more complicated. But all in all, I hope this gave a basic sense of what to expect from chemical reactions!
