  • Introduction
  • Traits of an Epic Hero
  • He's stronger, more cunning, and more loyal than other mortal men!
  • Great Strength
  • Odysseus?!
  • This is Odysseus, one of the most frequently portrayed figures in literature. Tales of Odysseus’ conquests have turned him into a literary marvel, where he has become the greatest example of the archetypal epic hero. But what traits does he have that make him worthy of being a hero?
  • Cunning
  • Nohbdy, Nohbdy's tricked me!
  • According to the Oracle of Delphi, Pythia, all epic heroes usually share the same traits and/or accomplishments. In Odysseus case, he is capable of great strength and courage, he is loyal, and cunning. These traits have helped his character become the modern hero archetype that many today are based off of.
  • Loyal
  • Put heart in me to eat and drink-you may, by freeing my companions.
  • Odysseus's physical strength can be seen during the test of the suitors created by Penelope. This is because Odysseus is the only man strong enough to string the bow and shoot it through the axes. He then goes on to kill every suitor in the competition.
  • Is Odysseus really a hero?
  • "Nohbdy, Nohbdy's tricked me. Nohbdy's ruined me!""Ah well, if nobody has played you foul... we are no use in pain given by great Zeus."Odysseus tricks the cyclops by claiming that his name is Nohbdy, so when he and his men blind the cyclops, the other cyclopes do nothing to help him catch Odysseus.
  • When Odysseus tricks the goddess Circe into releasing his crew from the pig forms she trapped them in, he shows just how loyal he is to his crew."Circe's maids prepare a bath for Odysseus and offer him a tempting meal, but all Odysseus can think of is the fate of his men."
  • While Odysseus does have many heroic traits, he isn't without his flaws. Odysseus is prideful and vengeful. His pride is seen when after tricking the Cyclops and sailing away, he announces his name as though he believes he won't face any consequences from it. He is also vengeful, killing all the suitors after his wife. But I do believe he is a hero, as he does put his life on the line for others.
