  • Compromise of 1850 - January 1850
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin - March 1852
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act/“Bleeding Kansas” - May 1854
  • In the Compromise of 1850 was the fugitive slave act requiring people to return runaway slaves and help capture more slaves. Northerners didn't like this so some Northern states passed laws that wouldn't let slaves to be imprisoned without a jury trial.
  • Dred Scott Decision - March 1857
  • A book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This book created tensions between the Northerners and Southerners. The book argued that slavery was a political and moral issue. Northerners did protests against the Fugitive Slave Act and Southerners disapproved of it and thought it was a false narrative on slavery.
  • Harpers’ Ferry - October 1859
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act angered northerners because slavery could spread into those free states under the compromise.
  • Election of 1860 - November 1860
  • Dred Scott lived North of the MO Compromise for a long time. He thought that because he lived in a free state, that he was a free slave.
  • John Brown led 21 men to seize the federal arsenal. They helped distribute weapons to the slaves.
