  • I have an idea, lets make a compromise that works for the North and the South!
  • The Compromise of 1850 took place in September of 1850, and ended June 28, 1864. It consisted of five laws that dealt with the issue of slavery and territorial expansion. Henry Clay proposed the Compromise, which led to the Fugitive Act Slave being amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C. was abolished.

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin was an anti-slavery novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The story talks about the reality of slavery, and exactly what the slaves went through. Stowe also mentions Christianity and how the love of God can overcome slavery.
  • SLAVERY FOREVER!
  • The Kansas- Nebraska Act became a law on May 30, 1854. It repealed the Missouri Compromise, created two new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty. It then led to a violent rebellion "Bleeding Kansas" when pros-slavery and anti-slavery activists bombarded into territories to change the votes.

  • The Dred Scott Decision took place in 1857, a decision that shocked the nation. The U.S. States Supreme Court confirmed slavery in the U.S. territories, denied black citizenship in America, and declared the Missouri Compromise to be unconstitutional. Dred Scott was an enslaved African American who sued the U.S. for his family's freedom.

  • The Harpers' Ferry raid happened on October 16, 1859 and ended October 18, 1859. John Brown, and abolitionist, lead a small group to attack a federal army in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. His goal was to to start an armed rebel of enslaved people and destroy the establishment of slavery.
  • Election of 1860
  • The Election of 1860 took place on November 6, 1860. The election revealed the divisions within the U.S. right before the Civil War. It was also the first and only time the party ran ran a candidate for president.
