  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act caused the issue of slavery to become a main argument again, further straining the relationship between Northerns and Southerners in Congress.
  • 
  • Northerners, such as Democrats, Free Soilers, and Abolitionists, joined together to form the Republican Party, which united against the spread of slavery in the west.
  • 
  • For the election of 1856, the Republican Party chose John C. Fremont as their candidate. He ran against Democrat James Buchanan from Pennsylvania, and President Fillmore. 
  • 
  • The Republican party had almost no supporters outside of the free states, and Fremont lost the election to James Buchanan, who became the 15th president and served from 1857-1861.
  • I am happy this beautiful nation chose me as their next leader.
