- We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection
- Abraham Lincoln was elected the president of the United States after getting 180 out of the 303 electoral college votes. He only got 40% of the popular vote but due to the Democratic party being split he was able to win.
- After states in the south started to leave due to Lincoln being elected many officials tried to compromise to keep the Union together. This cause many problems as neither the North nor the South would be willing to change
- Many people were unsure what President Lincoln would say after most of the South had seceded due to the fact that some of the slave states had stayed in the Union. During his speech, he used a mix of toughness and words of peace in the hope of trying and keep his support going.
