  • 700 - 550 Million Years Ago
  • 4.6 Billion Years Ago
  • When the earth first formed there was almost no atmosphere, as the earth cooled an atmosphere of mostly gasses that came from volcanoes formed.
  • 400 - 290 Million Years Ago
  • 4-2.5 Billion Years Ago
  • 2.7 billion years ago a microscopic organism called cyanobacteria. They made oxygen with carbon dioxide with a process called photosynthesis.
  • 290 Million Years Ago - Now
  • 2.6 billion - 400 million years ago
  • The organisms helped create enough oxygen in the air that they started reacting with the methane in the air. Which is why the sky turned blue
  • During this time the oxygen in the atmosphere and the oxygen in the water increased a lot. This allowed species that used oxygen as a source of energy to thrive. Some scientists think that the boom in oxygen allowed more sea life to develop known as the Cambrian explosion.
  • Plants became very regular on land and this was because at this time when there was enough oxygen to support animals and plants and forest started growing.
  • This is the atmosphere we know today. The earth was a lot warmer back then compared to how it is now. Now scientists understand that the atmosphere changes the climate.
