  • The king is surrounded by gold because he is very wealthy. The king called some soldiers because they are planning an attack on another empire. These men are also very well trained and the army is so big that they are so powerful.

  • The Arab trader (on the left) is giving salt to the Ghana citizen (on the right). This is called the gold-salt trade and this was important in the trans-Saharan trade because this made Ghana very wealthy. Travelers had to pay a tax to be let in and salt was very valuable in medieval times.
  • The trader (on the right) is giving the soldier (on the left) gold since he is traveling through Ghana on the trade routes that he is using to go trade the salt that he harvest for some gold. Ghana would protect these routes from bandits if the traders used these routes and paid the taxes.
  • This shows a trader at the river in the southern forest of West Africa. He is bagging the drum to show that he is offering a trade of gold.
