As Dimmesdale is taking a walk in the woods Hester calls out to him.
Dimmesdale's Emotions
"What else could I look for, being what I am, and leading such a life as mine?""Hester, I am most miserable"
Dimmesdale is so surprised to see Hester here that he even questions if she is real.
Hester's Realization
"An enemy! And under mine own roof! What mean you?"
Hester and Dimmesdale talk about how the past seven years have gone

Dimmesdale talks about how he is miserable and how he feels speaking to his congregation knowing he has sinned. Hester attempts to comfort him.

After Dimmesdale's response Hester was fully aware of the pain she has caused Dimmesdale.
"Thou hast long had such an enemy, and dwellest with him under the same roof!"
Hester asks Dimmesdale to forgive her for everything she has done.
