  • William Still was a black man born free on October 7th, 1821, in Shamong Burlington County, New Jersey. At the age of 23 he had taught himself how to write and read.
  • A little while later, Still was recruited for the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery.In 1852 Still was named the chairman of the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery.
  • In the year 1855 Still went to Canada to see how all the refugees were doing and they were all fine and they were all determined. In 1872, Still wrote his book with the notes from his time in the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, titled The Underground Railroad.
