- Yeah, I went back to the park, and I never left. Nothing worked out because of this stupid leg!
- Have you stayed in touch with the men from our unit? Or did you go back to the park where you promised us free rides?
- You ruined my life! My life has been ruined since I lost my leg. I've been stuck at the pier because of it.
- I'm sorry, but I'm the one who shot your leg. I had to, because you wouldn't leave the building. I shot your leg to save your life.
- I forgive you for my leg. I'm so so sorry for what you had to do for me. I didn't know I had costed you your life!
- Eddie, you have to understand that sacrifice is a part of life. Robozzo made a sacrifice for us, and I made one for you. When you sacrifice something that is precious, you don't actually lose it.
- Chapter 2 starts with Eddie's surprise that the Captain is his second person. He finds him at his burial ground, with a rifle and army helmet in the ground. The Captain asks Eddie if he had kept in touch with the men from their troop- Morton, Smitty, etc. He says he hasn't, and that he'd been stuck at the pier for his whole life because of his leg.
- The Captain reveals to Eddie that he was the one that shot his leg. At first, Eddie is very angry with the Captain, and he even tries to fight him. However, the Captain explains that he had to do it in order to save Eddie from the burning building. Eddie immediately feels bad, but after the Captain explains why he did it, he feels a bit better about the situation.
- Whenever Eddie finds out that the Captain had shot his leg in order to ensure his survival, Eddie automatically feels horrible and guilty for being so mean and inconsiderate to the Captain. The Captain assures Eddie that sacrifice is a part of life, and that everyone makes them. He specifically states, "When you sacrifice something precious, you don't actually lose it."
