  • American military planners estimated that a direct invasion of Japan could result in hundreds of thousands of American casualties. Thefore, the use of atomic bombs was seen as a way to potentially force Japan to surrender without the need for a costly and protracted ground or water invasion.

  • Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were considered important military and industrial centers in Japan. Hiroshima was a major port city and a communications hub, while Nagasaki was a significant industrial city with shipbuilding and weapons production facilities. Targeting these cities was seen as potentially disrupting Japan's war effort and weakening their ability to continue fighting. In the early morning of August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay, a B-29 Bomber had changed the fate for the residents in Nagasaki, and Hiroshima.
  • The deadly aftermath of this disastrous nuclear attack resulted in more than 200,000 people killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with tragically more than 40% of these cities destroyed.
