I'M SCARED OF YOUR CAT! WILL IT BITE ME? DOES IT HAVE FLEAS?
Mr. Bogart assigns a diorama project to the class. Annette and Kim decide to work on the project together. They go to Annette's house that afternoon to work on the project.
Annette's Mom is surprised at how formal Kim is when she introduces herself.
MY Mom laid some supplies out for us.
Annette is so fortunate to have such a loving family.
Kim is terrified of animals. She has not been around them very much.
School
I'm glad Mrs. Avery agreed to drop me off at school. I'm not sure how Annette will react if she finds out where I live. (sigh)
Mrs. Avery makes Kim feel better by showing her how to pet the cat and tells her the cat does not have fleas.
Kim slowly walks home
Annette's house is so different from mine. It is so warm and friendly. I miss that feeling.
The Avery Family's Maid makes Annette and Kim a snack of Ritz crackers and cheese. Kim is amazed at the difference between this family and her own.
Kim felt comfortable and she enjoyed watching the interactions of the Avery family.
Kim did not want Annette and her Mom to see where she lived, so she asked Mrs. Avery to drop her off at the school.
On the walk home, Kim thought about how warm and friendly Annette's house was, but then she realized that she also felt lonely.
Kim arrives home
Ma, can I go to Annette's for dinner? She invited me.
I forbid you to go back to the Avery's house!
Ma is worried
I know Kim is upset with me, but we have nothing to repay the Avery's with.
SUMMARY
I wish Ma worried about me, like Mrs. Avery worries about Annette and her brother.
Ma considers the Avery's kindness as a debt that they will have to repay. She knows that they will not be able to invite Annette to their apartment because she will see how poor they are.
