- my name is AbrahamLincoln , i have just been elected into office as the 16th president of the United States.
- we will not let this stand , lets form our own government.
- You can not take this property , it belongs to the union.
- we don't care , we'll take what we want.
- in 1854, antislavery political parties united to form the republican party in time for the upcoming election . Abraham Lincoln joined the new party in 1856 and addressed the Illinois republican convention in 1858 and said , "a house divided against itself cannot stand. Abraham Lincoln was chosen as the presidential candidate by republicans . He won the election of 1860.

- after Lincoln won the election southern states were angry . seven southern states seceded and formed a new nation in december 1861 . They were called The Confederate States of America, also known as the confederacy.

- Lincoln took office in march of 1864 , he hoped that the confederate states would return to the union but the confederates started to attack union property and steal from them , which led to war. A war known as the civil war.
- They have limited us from enlisting . the rest of us have to do something.

- When war broke out Black men in the North were lined up volunteering to fight but they were denied the ability to enlist.
- contrabands started to show up in the north to union army camps seeking protection and wanting to help the union cause , they offered to be cooks or hospital orderlies. The navy later approved active enlistment of black men in september 1861.
- In July 1862 congress approved limited enlistment of Black men . Black regiments started to form. Some of them formed in Union controlled south. one of the first regiments was called the 54th Massachusetts infantry.
