I'm worried about the safety of the USSR. After the Truman Doctrine was passed, people may start to leave and go to the West!
That might cause the rest of countries who have a part of Berlin give up their control of the city...
...and then the USSR will be safe! This plan must be put into action immediately!
After the events of the Truman Doctrine, Stalin was worried about what would happen to the people who would move to Western Europe.
I propose an idea. What if we blocked access to the areas of Berlin not occupied by the USSR, so that we can supply Berlin with resources; and therefore, have economic control over Berlin?
June 1948
In June 24th, 1948, Stalin blocked all land access to West Berlin in hopes that this would give him economic control over Berlin.
The United States, Great Britain, and other nations agreed upon sending resources to the 2 million people residing in Berlin.
The people of Berlin will starve if we do not intervene!
We need to calculate how much food and flights we would need...
Way ahead of you. We would need around 200,000 flights and 13,000 tons of food daily for a year.
What if the United States Air Force and the British Royal Air Force combined efforts to send resources to Berlin?
These nations would work on getting supplies to Berlin for nearly 11 months...
...which resulted in success! This accomplishment humiliated the Soviets...
...and in April 21st, 1949, the blockade was lifted.
In 1949, the three Western zones of Germany merged and became West Germany. The Soviet-controlled area of German became East Berlin, and Germany would remain divided until the reunification of Germany in 1990.
