  • I'm worried about the safety of the USSR. After the Truman Doctrine was passed, people may start to leave and go to the West! 
  • That might cause the rest of countries who have a part of Berlin give up their control of the city...
  • ...and then the USSR will be safe! This plan must be put into action immediately!
  • After the events of the Truman Doctrine, Stalin was worried about what would happen to the people who would move to Western Europe.
  • I propose an idea. What if we blocked access to the areas of Berlin not occupied by the USSR, so that we can supply Berlin with resources; and therefore, have economic control over Berlin?
  • June 1948
  • In June 24th, 1948, Stalin blocked all land access to West Berlin in hopes that this would give him economic control over Berlin.
  • The United States, Great Britain, and other nations agreed upon sending resources to the 2 million people residing in Berlin.
  • The people of Berlin will starve if we do not intervene!
  • We need to calculate how much food and flights we would need...
  • Way ahead of you. We would need around 200,000 flights and 13,000 tons of food daily for a year.
  • What if the United States Air Force and the British Royal Air Force combined efforts to send resources to Berlin?
  • These nations would work on getting supplies to Berlin for nearly 11 months...
  • ...which resulted in success! This accomplishment humiliated the Soviets...
  • ...and in April 21st, 1949, the blockade was lifted.
  • In 1949, the three Western zones of Germany merged and became West Germany. The Soviet-controlled area of German became East Berlin, and Germany would remain divided until the reunification of Germany in 1990.
