- Janet and Max walked for miles every day. They saw many things, such as people building houses and places where Native Americans had lived.
- But the Native Americans were here first! That's not fair to them.
- Janet. . . where are all the Native Americans? Didn't they live all over America?
- I wish we could do something to stop it.
- They did, Max, but when settlers started moving west a lot of them were killed or moved out of where they had been living.
- So do I, but what we can so is learn from the past, so it's not repeated in the future.
- I know it is Max. Unfortunately, it's one of the worse parts of American history.
- They continued traveling, learning as much as they could.
- It's so interesting to see all of the different trails and ways people are living in the West!
- That's right Max! Many people moved for opportunities in logging, farming, mining, and shipping!
- Janet and Max followed the wagon caravans even further West. They experienced all of trails people took to get there.
- A lot of people certainly moved after the Louisiana Purchase, huh?
- That's amazing! Do people, still use these trails?
- They sure did! There were about six main trails people took to move West. Two of the most common ones were the Utah and Santa Fe trails.
- It's not common, but some history buffs might enjoy visiting them because of the history they hold!
- Finally, Janet and Max reached the west coast. They were happy to finally be done with their travel West.
- We made it. . .
- The next day, Max had an idea on how to get home.
- I think that's a good idea. Let's try it!
- Pages are pages until you read them. Then they become your reality.
- So, Janet, I've got an idea of how to get home. When we got here we read the journal at the same time. Maybe we should repeat that part together again and see if it works.
- Janet and Max Made it back home. They ended up presenting their project and getting an A+ with the help of their firsthand look at westward expansion.
