- Peasants and nobles were required to pay one-tenth of their income to produce to the church. In the decades leading into the French Revolution peasants paid land tax to the state and a 5% property tax.

- The government raised prices for food, peasants could barely afford any food at this time. There were many bread riots.

- The ideals of liberty and equality, were needed to overthrow Louis XIV, influenced by Enlightenment thinkers. These were the writings of John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Baron de Montesquieu greatly influenced the French Revolution.

- The new revolutionary government pledged "not to separate, and to resemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established."
- The storming of Bastille occurred on the afternoon of July 14, 1789. A mob from Paris were in search of large quantities of arms and ammunition that they believed was stored at the fortress.

- Women who worked at marketplaces were mad about the high prices and scarcity of bread. They marched down to Versailles on October 5, 1978, eventually forcing the royals to return to Paris.
