- Ch. 7
- Dally will live but the other boy, Johnny will be crippled for the rest of his life if he lives.
- Ch. 8
- You'll be okay, you gotta be. We couldn't get along without you.
- Ch.9
- Ponyboy and his brothers revisit the hospital to check up on Dally and Johnny and learn that Johnny will be crippled if he survives. Later that same day Ponyboy meets with Randy and has a talk with him inside of his car they work things out and Randy tells Ponyboy he won't be participating in the rumble.
- Ch.10
- Ponyboy, Two-Bit, and Dally revisit the hospital again and is informed by the doctors that Johnny is in critical condition and see Johnny and tell Johnny that the rumble is later that night.
- Ch.11
- It's the night of the rumble, Socs against Greasers, in a vacant lot. Greasers are succesful and win the rumble.
- Ch.12
- After winning the rumble, Dally and Pony boy rush to the hospital to see Johnny one last time. They see Johnny and his last words were " Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold . . ."
- Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold...
- After leaving the hospital Dally was able to get the police to chase him. Once they catch him, he pulls out a gun and the police start shooting at him.
- Ponyboy has been behind work in school, to make up for it his English teacher told him to write a 5-page theme. After finding and reading Johnny's letter Ponyboy decides to write his theme about. He decides to write about the greaser's side of the story so people would judge them right away.
- When I stepped out of the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.
