- People in Russia were rioting because Tsar Nicholas II refused to handle the famine. The Tsar abdicated in 1917. People were also resentful of the provisional government that was set up, so the Bolshevik Party, led by Lenin seized power.
- Using conspiracies and murder, Stalin exiled his main rival, Leon Trotsky, and became the leader of Russia following Lenin's death in 1924.
- As a part of Stalin's 5-year plan for industrialization, Russian farmers were forced to work on collective farms and give extra harvest to the State. This exploitation caused a great famine in 1932 where over 7 million people died.
