Storyboard Text

  • Initial Event
  • They must think Binta is a thief. That’s why she’s been summoned to the throne room... I can see Father swinging down his sword (Adeyemi 40).
  • Propels the Action By...
  • One moment Binta stands. In the next, Father's sword plunges through her chest (Adeyemi 46-47).
  • Outcome
  • I unroll the scroll and trace the strange symbols, trying in vain to make sense of them... Yet they are symbols that Maji died for. Symbols that might as well be written in Binta's blood... Without thinking, I grab Father's cloak (Adeyemi 50-51).
  • Princess Amari goes to her father's throne room because she believes her best friend has been accused of theft and will be punished.
  • Initial Event
  • What about Lagos?
  • Because she happens to be in the throne room at the time, Amari sees her friend perform magic then sees her father stab her to death her for it (they don't see her). This propels the action by upsetting Amari enough to do anything to help other Maji people.
  • Propels the Action By...
  • Witnessing her friend's death causes Amari, in her grief, to steal the scroll that gives Maji their powers back and leave the palace to keep it away from her father.
  • Outcome
  • Zélie chooses to go to Lagos to sell fish and raise enough money to for the taxes Maji have to pay for existing.
  • Not to run. That market's filled with nobles. I can trade the sailfish there. I'll come back with three moons' worth of taxes. And coin for a new boat (Adeyeme 33).
  • Running away won't work.
  • While trading, Zélie happens to come across Amari, who is on the run from the guards. This propels the action of the story because without Zélie, Amari would have been caught, the scroll would have been returned to her father, and the story would have ended.
  • After meeting Amari, Zélie helps her escape the city and decides to help her use the scroll to give the Maji their powers back so they could stop being discriminated against by regular civilians.
