Meet Brandon, a new transfer student at Cal Poly studying Mechanical Engineering. He is currently enrolled in IME 142, a course entitled Metal Joining, and regularly accesses the Mustang 60 Machine Shop in the Bonderson Projects Center on campus to complete his homework
This is Andrei, a senior technician at Cal Poly's Mustang 60 Machine Shop and an associtate professor of Aerospace Engineering who has worked at the shop or 14 years now. He routinely checks tools out to students and goes around the machine shop helping students operate the equipment.
Day to day, Andrei is stretched very thin at the machine shop having to quickly alternate between guiding students and lending tools that require his approval.
The current checkout system requires that Andrei use physical tokens and keeps an iventory of loaned tools, taking away from time he could be spending helping students use the machinery.
I wish I didn't have to wait in line for so long just to check out a tool before being able to get started on my welding project.
Brandon often finds himself frustrated with the wait times to rent equipment.
Even once Brandon has the necessary tools for his project, he still spends much of his time waiting for a senior technician to become available.
I get that the technicians have other people to help, but maybe it wouldn't take so long if the checkout process wasn't so time-consuming.
But it doesn't have to be this way! With a new low-cost, close-range RFID checkout system that interfaces with mobile devices and desktops, Brandon can now just exit the rental area with whatever tool he needs.
