We have liftoff! Ascending 1,000 meters per minute.
1) Oh no! Our altimeter has malfunctioned! We can't tell how high we are off the ground! We will have to calculate it manually!
2) We are dropping 2,700 meters per minute due to an engine malfunction! I have gained back control, we have stopped descending. How can we tell how high we are off the ground?
4) Wow! I never knew that, I always use an evil calculator. So then 15,000 + (-9,000) is...wait, how do you add integers with different signs?
2) Ok, that means we were at 15,000 meters before the malfunctions.
1) We can use the laws of integers! If we ascended 1,000 meters per minute for 15 minutes, we can multiply! Two positives make a positive when multiplying or dividing integers.
3) Then we started descending at 6,000 meters per minute for 1.5 minutes. (-6,000) x 1.5 is (-9,000) because when multiplying or dividing a negative and a positive it is always a negative!
3) Great work! Now we know that we need to ascend 14,000 meters to get to cruise altitude at 20,000 meters. Now we will be at our destination in no time!
1) To add integers with different signs, take the number with the greater absolute value, then subtract!
2) I'm learning so much! The final step to figure out the altitude of the plane is 15,000 + (-9,000). The answer is 6,000 meters!
1) That was a crazy flight! I am glad we made it back safe.
3) I am glad I could help! Yes, never use evil calculators, your brain is better!
2) Good thing you saved the day with your math skills! Thanks you so much, I will make sure to never use a calculator again!
4) Until next time, I hope to see you on one of my flights again!
