  • I want to disappear...
  • Amy, a Chinese American, fell in love with Robert, who is white. It was Christmas Eve and Amy's parents invited Robert and his family over for dinner. Amy was panicking because she was afraid he would judge her Chinese culture.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Goodbye!
  • Amy, can I talk to you?
  • As they sat down for dinner, all of Amy's relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks, reached across the table, and lacked American manners, Amy was super embarrassed, especially after her mother brought out the whole steamed fish.
  • RESOLUTION
  • Amy's father poked his chopsticks at the fish and offered her some tender fish cheek, “Amy, your favorite,” Amy wanted to disappear, she just stood there in silence as Robert made a nauseous face.
  • EPILOGUE (bonus sence)
  • Finally, as dinner came to an end, her relatives continued to belch since It’s a polite Chinese custom. Amy was relieved that dinner was finally over. As the Robert family left, Amy's mom pulled her to the side and handed her an early gift.
  • Inside the gift was a miniskirt in beige tweed. She said to Amy, “you want to be the same as American girls on the outside... but inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame."
