  • Women in the War
  • Hello, I am Lydia Darragh. I have been a patriot spy during the American Revolution.
  • Pleasure to meet you. I am Esther De Berdt Reed. I have formed and led the Ladies Association of Philadelphia to help raise money for General Washington's troops.
  • Pleasure to meet you as well. I am Martha Washington. I have helped aid my husband and his troops during all their winter encampments, including Valley Forge.
  • I'm Deborah Sampson. I have been one of the few women who have served in the Continental Army for 17 months.
  • Native Americans in the War
  • African Americans in the War
  • Women contributed to the cause of the war effort in many ways. These women have been spies, camp followers, active physical supporters, and fundraisers.
  • Foreign-Born Heroes of the Revolution
  • I am Baron von Steuben. I have trained the soldiers at Valley Forge how to fight like soldiers. So has Casimir Pulaski.
  • I am Marquis de Lafayette. I have offered to help the Patriots without being payed and I have provided them with guns, ships, and bullets.
  • I am Bernardo de Gálvez. I have used an export military strategy to lead the American troops to victory!
  • Native Americans were either on the Patriot side, the British side, or no side at all. Some thought that they would get their land back if they choose a side. Some thought it was better to stay neutral than to join sides for their own safety and independence. In the end, they never got their land back.
  • Espionage/Intelligence Gathering
  • I am Abraham Woodhull. I was a Patriot spy who joined a secret group called the Culper Spy Ring. This group was organized to send information to General Washington about British activity.
  • I am Anna Strong. I was also a Patriot spy who also joined the Culper Spy Ring. I have signaled other spies information on where other spies were waiting and when to transfer a document to General Washington.
  • Like some Native Americans, African Americans choose either the Patriot side or the British side. Most were enslaved blacks who wanted freedom. Very few were free. In the end, very few African Americans were freed by the British, and most were recaptured and put back in slavery from both sides.
  • Weapons and Tactics
  • These heroes have come all the way from Prussia (Baron von Steuben), France (Marquis de Lafayette), Bavaria (Baron Johann de Kalb), Poland (Casimir Pulaski and Tadeusz Kosciuszko), and Spain (Bernardo de Galvez) to help the Patriot side win their independence.
  • I am Baron Johann de Kalb. I have joined General Washington at Valley Forge and accepted a commission as a major general in the Continental Army.
  • I am Tadeusz Kosciuszko. I have offered my services in the war and master minded a key British defeat at the Battle of Saratoga.
  • These spies have used ciphers, codes, masked letters, and black chamber operations in order to contact the generals what the opposing side is planning to do.
  • I am Benedict Arnold. I was a British Spy and a Patriot General. I became a traitor at the time from being an American General to becoming a British soldier.
  • I am Ann Bates. I was also a British spy and had a fake name in order to gain information.
  • Weapons and equipment were major roles in The American Revolution. Soldiers used muskets, cannons, Bayonets, pistols, tomahawks, and swords. They would use Guerrilla tactics and Linear tactics.
