  • King Louis XIV’s Failed Escape 
  •    Tuileries Palace
  • Hurry up, before they caught us!
  • National Convention- The First French Republic
  • Frenchmen, we announced the abolition of the monarchy and declared the first French Republic.
  • The Jacobins 
  • Girondins ↓
  • 361 out of the 700 voted for the execution of Louis XIV. I announced King Louis XVI will be executed by guillotine in the Place de la Revolution in Paris on January 21.
  • Jacobins ↓
  • In June 1791, Louis XVI and his family tried to escape from France, but they failed. King Louis XVI’s attempted escape showed he was a traitor to the revolution.
  • Execution of King Louis XVI
  • Many people saw the royal family as enemies after they attempted to escape. By September 1792, radicals took control of the Legislative Assembly and formed the National Convention. The National Convention abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic. 
  • Committee of Public Safety 
  • The National Convention was slowly get controlled by the Jacobins. The Jacobins was a radical political club, and members of the Jacobins were mostly middle-class lawyers or intellectuals.
  • Rise of Robespierre 
  • I believed liberty cannot be secured unless criminals lose their head.
  • King Louis was tried for treason and convicted. In January 1973, he was beheaded by the guillotine. In October of the same year, his wife Marie Antoinette was also executed.
  • My people, I die innocent!
  • The Committee of Public Safety was created by Maximillien Robespire, after the execution of King Louis XIV. The Committee of Public Safety's task was to protect the Revolution and Republic from its foreign and domestic enemies.
  • We will be responsible for watching over the work of the government and take measures to defend the revolution against internal and external enemies.
  • Robespierre headed the Committee of Public Safety. He came to power as the leader of the Committee of Public Safety, and dominated position in the revolutionary government. He believed that France could achieve a “republic of virtue“ only through the use of terror.
