Our ancestors decided that for their safety, they would form a small community with surrounding families.
Just like other communities, our ancestors had a central lord or master. The master and the majority of their people lived on a manor which consisted of the church, the village, and the castle.
On the outskirts of the manor there are many fields full of crops. Our manors are very isolated. Sometimes though, peddlers, soldiers, and pilgrims visit.
Sometimes, the king will award land grants called fiefs to his best nobles, barons, and bishops in return for their contributions of soldiers for the army.
The lowest members of this feudal system are called serfs.
In exchange for living and working on his land, the lord will offer protection to the serfs.
This is all because of the feudal system!
