Storyboard Text

  • Tommy is riding his bike around town, and he decides to go up into the hills.
  • He is pushing up the hill and has to be able to push past the inertia by pushing down harder on the pedals to get up the hill.
  • His bike starts down the hill gaining more and more kinetic energy and more speed.
  • His bike hits the bench in the middle of the road, and the bike abruptly stops, but Tommy stays in motion and goes flying off the bike.
  • The force of gravity pulls him down to the ground so he wouldn't just be flying forever, and Tommy hits the ground hard, which disrupts the motion.
  • Newton's 3rd law states that objects in motion will stay in motion and objects at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by another force.
  • This is much like how Tommy's bike hit the bench and it will stay at rest until Tommy went over to push it back onto the road. And when it stopped, Tommy continued to fly forward off the bike until he hit the ground by the force of gravity pulling him down.
