- The clown costume symbolizes how Fortunato is making himself a character in Montresor whole scheme, and is unaware of what is about to happen to him.

- When Montresor asks Fortunato if he wants to leave when he is chained to the wall shows verbal irony because Montresor had been asking if he wanted to leave and he kept saying no, but now that he is tied up, Fortunato wants to leave but can't anymore.

- I am not going to die from a cough.
- An example of dramatic irony is when Montresor makes a cheers to Fortunato's long life, this is dramatic irony because the reader knows that Fortunato is going to die but he does not.
- An example of imagery is when Montresor is stacking up the brick and he describes the dampness of the catacombs and the screaming coming from Fortunato.
- An example of dramatic irony is when Fortunato says that he is going to die from a cough, but the reader knows that Montresor is going to kill Fortunato.
