I am a Freedmen. Freedmen like me and black women in the south were getting harassed by radical police officers during Reconstruction. This was illegal because the 14th Amendment stated that everyone had equal protection no matter your race. The south didn't want to follow Johnson's Restoration plan and the new amendments that were made. The south was rebelling the president and the Federal Government.
The police didn't care about the Civil Rights Act and didn't want blacks to have rights. They abused blacks like they were slaves, and slaves were abolished in the 13th Amendment and the south was furious about that. They wanted the south to be segregated and keep the blacks away from them. Blacks were always out of the picture to all whites.
The Ku Klux Klan also terrorized blacks and killed them throughout the south. Black codes also was a way to restrict blacks and make them equal to the white people. I think that we should have slugged the south instead of hugging them because of the way they treated different races that weren't white. Blacks were treated horrible in the south.
