Storyboard Text

  • Pope Urban II agreed to help the Byzantine Emperor. Their slogan was, "Deus le veult!" Which meant "God wills it!"
  • Pope Urban II please help us. We are being harassed by the Turks!
  • I will call the soldiers of Christ. They will help you defend Constantinople. 
  • Peter the Hermit's army consisted of untrained men, women and children to fight the Muslim kingdoms and Turks. Most of them died because they were not ready. The First Crusade was a raging success. They captured Jerusalem and turned back the Turks.
  • I'm Peter the Hermit, and I'll defeat you!
  • King Louis II, the german emperor, and Eleanor of Aquitaine participated in the second crusade. But despite the crusade's powerful backing, it failed. The leaders argued and were not able to gain local support.
  • Aw man, our crusade failed.
  • We'll succeed next time.
  • How about we sign a truce instead?
  • Sure, why not? 
  • The Third Crusade was the result of fallen Jerusalem. Richard I, AKA Lionheart, led the crusade. He won important battles. 
  • Lionheart and Saladin developed a courteous relationship. Later, Saladin and Richard signed a truce. This ended the Third crusade. Jerusalem stayed in the Muslim Kingdom's hands.
  • Peace for everybody!!
  • The Fourth Crusade embarrassed the pope. The crusaders had never reached the Holy Land. They tried to get moeny for their campain by looting Christian cities along the road. Things began to turn for the worse. In 1291, Egyptian Muslims defeated the last crusader state.
