- There is variation
- There is a predator
- The gazelle species produce more offspring than will survive.
- Natural Selection
- There is variation in the speed trait so some gazelles are faster than others. This is due to mutation in the genes.
- Adaptation
- As it gets late, the cheetah nearby gets hungry. The gazelles are going to have to compete to survive.
- Evolution
- The cheetah attacks and only the fastest gazelles survive.
- Only the faster gazelles live to reproduce, so they will pass their faster trait onto their children.
- Over time, the population will increase in overall speed because only the fastest gazelles can reproduce.
