  • Let's talk about the Cold War at school.
  • Hey Bob!
  • Hey there Bill!
  • Ok sure.
  • The Berlin Wall separated Germany into east and west Germany. East Germany was a Communist state while West Germany was a democracy.
  • Winston Churchill, the British prime minister said that due to Soviet oppression, an Iron Curtain descended across Europe.
  • The Cold War was fought between to superpowers, the United States and Russia.
  • The leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, created two terms, perestroika and glasnost.
  • Glasnost allows the citizens to talk more openly about the government.
  • Perestroika was the practice of restructuring or reforming the economic and political system.
  • I love Social Studies class!
  • President Harry S. Truman began the policy of containment to stop the spread of communism.
  • The U.S then established NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which was a military alliance between the U.S, Canada, and some Western European countries.
  • Containment had 3 approaches, the Marshall Plan, the Truman Doctrine, and NATO.
  • So am I Bill, so am I!
  • The Marshall Plan gave 13 billion dollars to help Europe rebuild after WW2, the Truman Doctrine was a promise to supply military and economic aid to any country struggling to create or maintain a democracy, and NATO was the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
  • Now I'm ready for my Cold War test tomorrow!
