  • May 14, 1804 The Corps of Discovery leaves its camp near St. Louis and begins the journey west.
  • We are going to hire you for the rest of our journey
  • Early September 1804 The Corps enters the Great Plains. Lewis and Clark begin sighting unfamiliar animal species.
  • October 24, 1804 The Corps arrives at the villages of the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes near present-day Bismarck, North Dakota.
  • November 11, 1804 Lewis and Clark hire Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau as interpreters for the rest of the journey.
  • December 24, 1804 The Corps finishes building Fort Mandan near the Indian villages.
  • April 7, 1805 The Corps leaves Fort Mandan to resume its westward travel.
