- Happy Birthday

- Douglass and other slaves had no correct date of when they were born or seen any authentic record containing it. Douglass didn't even know/remember any slave that did. The slaves were not allowed to say anything to their master concerning it.
- CH 1, Par. 4
- Douglass was separated from his mother at a younger age. Before a child can even reach 12 months they were taken away from the mother. And hired out to a farm.
- Ch 1, Par 5.
- Douglass's mother would sneak out at night to see him. He does not remember seeing his mother during the daytime. She would put him to sleep, there was little communication between them. However, she died when he was seven she was not allowed to attend anything related to that.
- Ch 1, Par 6.
- There had been word that the master was Douglass's father. Slaveholders have ordained, and by law established. Children of slave women shall in all cases follow the condition of their mothers
- I heard the master was your father.
- When a slave's master is their father, the master is supposed to sell the slave out of the feeling of his white wife. If he does not he has to whip the slave and has to watch and let one of his white sons tie up his brother.
