Storyboard Text

  • Surrender at Yorktown
  • I surrender!
  • Articles of Confederation
  • WEAK.
  • Get rid of it!
  • Admitting new states
  • We have 63,000 free people, can we become a state?
  • The Battle of Yorktown was the last battle of the American Revolution, and the British surrendered, giving America victory.
  • Shay's Rebellion
  • We can't pay our taxes!
  • The Articles of Confederation was the first government, and under this Congress was allowed to declare war, handle foreign affairs, appoint military officers, and coin money. The weaknesses, however, included  fighting between the states, money problems, and foreign countries were taking advantage of them.
  • The Constitutional Convention
  • Let's compromise!
  • If an area had 60,000 or more free people living there, it could ask Congress to become a state. Five new states were formed: Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.
  • Signing the Constitution
  • Too much power!
  • Farmers attacked a courthouse because they couldn't pay off their debts, and taxes were too high. This attack was a sign of a weak government. However, George Washington eventually stopped this rebellion, keeping the country together.
  • Get rid of the Articles!!
  • The Constitutional Convention was held to revise the Articles of Confederation.  There were two rival plans made: the Virginia Plan, which  is what the larger states wanted and then the New Jersey Plan, which is what the smaller states wanted. Congress eventually made a compromise though, which became known as the Great Compromise.
  • We want the Virginia Plan!
  • We want the New Jersey Plan!
  • The Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. However, three delegates- Edmund Randolph, George Mason, and Elbridge Gerry- refused to sign it because they thought it gave the national government too much power.
