It was also around that time that he was stripped of his championship and banned from fighting by the US athletic commission for 3 half years.In addition,he was criminally convicted, on June 20, 1967 for refusing to join the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and sentenced to five years in prison.Muhammad Ali was 22 when he converted from Christianity to Islam after he won the Sony Liston heavyweight championship. - On June 3rd 2016, Muhammad Ali died in Phoenix, Arizona due to a reported respiration issue. He had been suffering from Parkinson's disease as well. He was 74 years old at the time of death.
