  • 1 Genetic Processes
  • The idea of DNA cloning came to be because of bacteria. Microbiologists first learned how bacteria reproduce asexually. To do cloning they used bacteria genetic material and inserted it into a gene of an organism. Then it was put in a condition suitable for it where it can replicate or clone the same gene over and over again.
  • In your biology class you must have talked about DNA cloning and how bacteria reproduce asexually.
  • Diversity of Living Things (could not find actual algae to use)
  • You have learned that algae are an important protist because they are responsible for most oxygen and organic matter in aquatic ecosystems.
  • Algae are very helpful but can also create toxins. Algal blooms are a large number of algae that rapidly grow taking over aquatic ecosystems. Microbiologists found that to break down algal blooms only a few microbes are needed. This was unexpected for them as previously showed more than 50 different bacteria needed to break down algal blooms.
  • Diversity of Living Things
  • Microbiologists study various viruses that are harmful and try to come up with vaccines for them. Microbiologists can study their microbes and how they interact with their environments and other organisms. They can also study how they attach themselves to other organisms and how they end up being distributed throughout a population of hosts.
  • You have also learned about vaccines and what they are.
  • Evolution
  • You learned that everything is related. We have around 200 genes in common with bacteria.
  • Plants
  • You have learned about the root system and how it is made of the roots, used to absorb water and minerals
  • Plants
  • Auxin is a hormone you have learned in class that is in plants that promotes plant growth.
  •
  • The bacteria that are in or on us are descendants of the earliest microorganisms. They have evolved with us. Microbiologists can study the microbes in our bodies to help us figure out our ancestral journey.
  • Bacteria can be found in the roots of plants because it is in the soil it is planted in. Microbiologists can study the different types of bacteria in soil and find out how it helps the plant. For example, there are bacteria called Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria which aids in the growth of the plant. Microbiologists can analyze these bacteria to help grow certain crops better and faster since it is more needed than ever right now due to the continuous growth of the world population .
  • Endophytes are bacteria in plants that help protect them and also stimulate plant growth. Microbiologists are studying this bacteria because it has antimicrobial and anticancer properties to it. This bacteria is being used for new drug discoveries that could possibly be used in the future for humans and animals.
