- Rainsford on a Boat
- “You’re a big-game hunter,not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?”
- Rainsford Swimming yo an Island
- Rainsford Finding a House
- “I fell off ayacht. I am hungry.”
- In the begnginng of the story Rainsford and Whitney are having a conversation. They are talking about whether or not an animal can understand feelings. Whitney decides to go to bed, but Rainsford decides to stay up.
- Conversation with Zaroff
- "I huntthe scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships..."
- In the middle of the night, Rainsford hears a loud noise. He decides to get near the end of the boat to investigate. He accidentally falls off. While in the ocean he hears more shots, so he swims to the direction of the sounds. He ends up on an island.
- The Decision
- “Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and staminaagainst mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?”
- Rainsford finds a house on the island. When he knocks on the door, he meets Ivan. Ivan opens the door and is pointing a gun at him. Rainsford explains that he is lost and hungry. A general named Zaroff tells Ivan to stop and he lets Rainsford into his house.
- The Hunt
- General Zaroff invites Rainsford to dinner. The general explains that he is a hunter like Rainsford. Zaroff has been hunting for years and claims that he has hunted almost every animal. Things take a dark turn when Zaroff explains that he hunts humans since he is bored with animals. Rainsford is in shock.
- Rainsford goes to bed in shock. Zaroff wants to go hunting the next day with him to kill a human. The next day Rainsford decided to tell Zaroff that he will not hunt. They both get into an argument. Zaroff decides that is going to hunt Rainford. He can't run because Ivan would kill him. Rainsford then gets ready to be the prey.
- "No General. I will not hunt."
- Rainsford has to survive for three days, while Zaroff is trying to hunt him (kill). Rainsford is given a knife and he tries to get as far away from. During the night Zaroff follows his tracks until he finds. Zaroff allowed him to live for the first night. On the second night, Rainsford creates a trap, but it does not kill Zaroff. Zaroff then went home waiting for the next day.
