  • Hello Class. We are going on a field trip to places in Houston so we can see and hear about the changes that took place after the Civil War.
  • Here, discrimination was enforced. African Americans were not allowed to go to church with whites.
  • This building was once used for men only to vote. Women were not allowed to vote, which was the Women Suffrage.
  • This is downtown Houston. Many retail stores and movie theaters practiced Jim Crow LAWS. THEY DID NOT ALLOW BLACKS IN.
  • I would have never thought it was like that here.
  • This is a rural area of Houston, After the Civil War Sharecroppers used land like this to grow crops to make a living and pay a small amount to former slaves to help grow the crops.
  • Ms. Williams, Is there any history at this school you can tell us about?
  • Yes, Our now desegregated school was once segregated. Only whites attended.
