Dad: "And then one day he was just gone. He left a note saying he'd come back, that he'd meet her in New York when he figured things out, but it wasn't enough. She couldn't get over it." (39-54)
Progress Check #3By Jeffrey Kern
Theme Development #2
"Finn always asked- of course he would. But I knew you hoped I'd say no. Don't even lie. If I came along, you'd resent me. And if I didn't, well, then I wouldn't be a part of any of it. " (41-59)
Throughout the novel, the theme of new and changing relationships often occurs among multiple characters. This theme is developed as June's mother grows apart from Finn after he leaves home and she becomes jealous of his partner, as Greta and June become more distant because of Finn, and as Finn dies and June meets Toby.
Theme Development #3
"Toby would give me a look out of the corner of his eye and it was like he'd known me forever, which was creepy but at the same time kind of hard not to like, and suddenly the whole thing seemed so ridiculous it took everything I had not to burst out laughing." (125- 26)
This theme first develops with Finn and Danni as children, friends, and aspiring artists. Danielle was shocked when Finn left home for his trip of self discovery as an artist and meeting Toby. This changed their relationship as Danni wanted to be separate from Toby whom she thought ruined Finn's opportunity and potential. For the next few years Danni would be separate from Finn as their bond would forever be shattered.
Thematic Solution
"I watched as she ran her hand over his soft feathery hair, and even though her back was to me, I think I heard her say, "Sorry."" (65-11)
June's Uncle Finn is her godfather, and they started spending lots of time together. Sisters Greta and June used to be great friends, playing with each other often. Greta became jealous of Finn and how June stopped thinking of her and wanted to be with Finn more than her. This caused Greta to lash out at June, changing their relationship for the worse. Pressured by her parents, Greta just wanted to go back to a carefree life. This also caused her to be meaner.
After June's beloved Uncle Finn dies, she gets a request to meet Toby, his boyfriend. She agrees and copes with him for her loss forming an unlikely relationship. The more she is with Toby, the more she learns more about how parts of her uncle shined through Toby. June then finds out that Finn told Toby to take care of June. This gives her doubt on whether Toby wants to be with her or is doing so because he is asked.
Toby is brought back home from the hospital by June after she and Greta have talked and learned the errors of their ways. Danni then comes down to see June with Toby on the couch. After a while, she understands that Toby was her friend and is learning to accept him as a good person. Toby dies which makes June realize that she loved both her uncle and Toby in a different way and is learning to accept that. She also has accepted that they are gone but she can move on.
