  • I do not like sharing power and now that I am pope I shall do something about it
  • This new list of rules should set things strait
  • How could he do this? Whatever I will just not follow these silly rules.
  • 1073 an Italian monk became Pope Gregory VII. Pope Gregory did not want the Emporer, King Henry, to have power over the Church. He wanted full control over choosing Bishopes.
  • I shall remove you from position as pope
  • It doesn't matter I have excommunicate you from church.
  • Pope Gregory decides to write a list of rules to assess the issue. These rules stated that he would have control over Church and the secular. Since the church was founded only by God, Popes could remove emperors and bishops from office.
  • Please I must have my power back or I wont be king.
  • Henry is shocked but decided not to follow the pope's rules. Henry hired his own bishop for Milan Italy. In return, pope Gregory appointed his own Bishop in rivalry.
  • This new concordat of worms should fix our troubles.
  • King Henry tried to remove Gregory from his position as a pope. Later Pope Gregory excommunicated king Henry from the church. This meant that he was no longer able to participate in religious activities.
  • Gregory also freed Henry's subjects and supporters from their oath to be loyal to the King. Henry decided he was so desperate for power that he decided to visit the Pope. Gregory kept him waiting outside in the snow for three cold days, Gregory forgave him and Henry was no longer excomunicated.
  • Even after forgiveness, their conflicts continued even after they died. But in 1122 they made an agreement called the concordat of worms which gave popes authority to appoint bishops and emporers were allowed to grant fiefs. Even with their agreement the conflicts never really settled.
