  • You are now crowned Holy Roman Emperor!
  • Thank you so very much! I will not disappoint you.
  • God sent me to fulfill his duties.
  • I thought he was chosen by the Church.
  •  Charlemagne was a devout Christian king. His goal was to build a Christian Empire in Europe. In 799 Pope Leo III asks for Charlemagne´s protection from being removed from Office.
  • I have the power to remove any one of you!
  • Charlemagne agreed to the Pope´s request of protecting him. The Pope reward him with being crowned the Holy Roman Emperor. The lasting effects were Pope won power to crown emperors and this angered the Byzantine Empire
  • Come this way and you shall be a bishop.
  • You are free to go!
  • Charlemagne believed that God had made him emperor to do God´s work on Earth. The Pope believed that the church had made Charlemagne emperor. 200 years later it lead to a clash between the Pope and emperor.
  • I am very sorry for what I have done.
  • You are forgiven.
  • In 1073 Pope Gregory issued a list of rules declaring his supreme authority over the Church and secular leaders. The Pope alone had the power to choose bishops and claimed to be able to remove emperors.  King Henry IV said they were a direct attack on his power and rights.
  • The conflict began when King Henry ignored the Pope´s rules and named his own bishop. The Pope appointed a rival bishop and because of that Henry tried to remove the Pope. King Henry was excommunicated by the Pope and he freed Henry´s subjects from their oath. The reaction from the people was that they took sides of the Pope and King Henry.
  • The conflict between the two ended because the Pope forgave Henry. The Concordat of Worms gave the Church the authority to appoint bishops. It also allowed emperors to give fiefs of land to bishops. This was not a success because the conflict between the Popes and emperors continued.
