  • please, that would be great, all i need is safety.
  • my friend, you look troubled, how may we assist you
  • my friend, you had helped me through my darkest times, i now pronounce you king.
  • what, this man is not fit to be emperor
  • It was you God who made me Emperor, I will do your work on earth well.
  • nooo, it was the church that made you emperor not God
  • Charlemagne was a king who's main goal was to build a Christian Empire located in Europe. Charlemagne and the pope worked together by when Pope Leo 3rd fled from Rome after invaders had threatened to bind and remove him from office. Charlemagne had provided protection and safety when Pope Leo had returned to Europe to regain his position as Pope.
  • yes, i have found my new bishop, and the pope will never know.
  • Whatever you say sir.
  • In reward for Charlemagne's actions, Pope Leo 3rd crowned Charlemagne emperor on Christmas Day in Rome. The long lasting effects on Europe and the church was strengthened by establishing the principle that only the pope could crown emperor. The Byzantine emperor was offended by this and a growing division between the eastern and western churches grew.
  • yes sir.
  • you deliberately disobeyed me, you went and got your own bishop when you weren't suppose to! You are excommunicated , now go sit in the snow fro three days before you even think about apologizing.
  • Charlemagne always believed that God had made him emperor so that he could do his work on earth for him. The pope always believed that the church had made Charlemagne emperor. 200 years later, different views led to a dramatic clash between an emperor and the pope.
  • Great idea Sir. Lets call it the Concordat of Worms!!
  • lets make an agreement that you can give grants of land to your bishops and the church is allowed to get their very own bishops,.
  • In 1073, pope Gregory issued a list of new rules declaring his supreme authority over both church and leaders. King Henry 1v reacted by ignoring the pope's rules and named his own bishop for the city of Milan, Italy. He broke the pope's rules and did what he wanted by naming his own bishop for his own city. The conflict was repetitive between the two.
  • Europe reacted when members and rulers took sides. The pope also freed Henry's people or supporters from their oaths of loyalty to their lord. They were freed when King Henry was excommunicated. This means that he did not belong to the church so he was considered an outsider.
  • The conflict ended between Pope Gregory and King Henry when King Henry was excommunicated and had to stand out in the snow for three days before asking for forgiveness from Pope Gregory. He was forgiven. This struggle continued on long after the two died, so The holy Roman Empire and the church came to an agreement that was called the Concordat of Worms. this allowed the Church to to choose their own bishop and also allowed emperors to give big grants of land to their bishop for an earning of loyalty. Even though they had an agreement, popes and kings still had constant conflicts.
  • great, lets do it!!!!!!!
