- A helmet...
- Back in my day we didn't have to wear any of that junk and we're all fine.
- Well grandpa, nowadays it is illegal to not wear a helmet.
- Well son, crime is just a social construct. You don't need to wear a helmet.
- Grandpa... we can't just decide that it isn't a crime. What is and is not a crime is determined through social processes.
- Well isn't this more of an informal deviance? Society may not share these values but that doesn't make it a crime.
- Actually this would be considered a crime since anyone under the age of 18 is legally obligated to wear a helmet. A crime is anything that is breaking the law.
- So why can't we decide if this is a crime or not? Why do other people get to decide if we have to wear one?
- A crime is also determined by how society reacts to your actions. In this case, I also have to think about how not wearing a helmet is a danger to myself and others.
- Well we never needed them. Back then we didn't get hurt riding our bikes.
- Haven't you noticed less people being injured on the road ever since we had to wear helmets. There were plenty of moral entrepreneurs pushing for helmet laws.
