Hi Ava, I wanted to ask you if you could tell me about the Indian Ocean Trade Network. I'm learning about it in school.
Sure! The Indian Ocean Trade Network was used for trading. Mariners (Sailers) would travel across the Indian Ocean to trade with Africa. They traded many goods, such as Cloth,Ivory,Slaves,Salt, Gold,Silk, and Precious Stones, like Diamonds.
But didn't it take a long time for them to cross? How did they do it so quick?
They did it because they used help from nature: Monsoons. Monsoons were very strong winds that happened from April to October, When the winds were pushing toward the direction they wanted to go, they would start to sail. The winds made them sail faster across the Indian Ocean.
Now, I just have one more question. Did they only trade goods?
That's a very good question! They didn't only trade goods, they traded ideas too! When people traveled across the Indian Ocean to West Africa they shared their religion, and it spread thoroughout the people. They also spreaded their languages, like Arabic and the African Language which eventually made a new language,, Swahili, which is one of the most spoken language in Africa.
